AlUla tourist places range from the Nabataean tombs of Hegra to the palm-shaded oasis, with Dadan, Elephant Rock and the Old Town in between. Our guests often ask where to begin, since the sights are spread across a wide desert valley. Here are the twelve we recommend most.
The top AlUla tourist attractions
1. Hegra (Madain Salih)
Hegra was an important center of the Nabataean Kingdom, and it remains one of AlUla’s most important archaeological sites. 111 monumental tombs are preserved in its sandstone mountains, many with carefully carved entrances and inscriptions. In 2008, it became Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. Dadan
Long before the Nabataeans, Dadan was the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms. It adds an earlier chapter to the story told at Hegra, and it shows how the oasis made settlement and trade possible in the region.
3. Jabal Ikmah
Jabal Ikmah is an archaeological site in AlUla, known for its collection of ancient inscriptions carved into sandstone. These inscriptions offer information about the people who lived in the region, their language and their daily lives.
A visit to Jabal Ikmah can be combined with Dadan, which is located nearby.
4. Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil)
Located about 11 km northeast of AlUla, Elephant Rock is a 52-metre sandstone formation shaped like an elephant with its trunk touching the ground. It is a popular place to visit at sunset, when the rocks take on different colors. Arriving early gives you time to enjoy the view and take photos.
5. Maraya
Maraya is a large mirrored building in Ashar Valley, famous for holding the Guinness World Records title as the world’s largest mirrored building. It hosts concerts, shows and other events, making it one of AlUla’s most well-known modern landmarks.
6. AlUla Old Town
AlUla Old Town is a restored mudbrick settlement and one of the best places to walk in the region. Cafés, small shops and restaurants are close by, which makes it an easy half-day after the heavier heritage sites.
7. AlUla Oasis (Wadi AlQura)
Known as the Valley of Villages, AlUla Oasis is a green area surrounded by rocky landscapes. It’s a lovely place for a morning walk or bike ride among the palm trees, especially during the cooler months.
8. Raqasat (the Dancing Rocks)
Raqasat Valley, in the Jabal Al Rukkab area, is known for its unusual rock formations shaped by wind and erosion over time. Some of the rocks look as if they are dancing, giving the valley its name. The area is about a 45-minute drive from AlUla city centre.
9. Harrat Viewpoint
Harrat Viewpoint offers a wide view across a dark volcanic lava field. It is best at sunrise or sunset, and usually quieter than the better-known stops.
10. Hijaz Railway Station
The Hijaz Railway Station in AlManshiyah is part of the historic railway that once connected Damascus with Madinah. Built in the early 20th century, the railway played an important role in travel across the region. Today, the restored station offers visitors a chance to learn about this period of AlUla’s history.
11. Al-Jadidah
Al-Jadidah is a newer district of art studios, galleries and cafés. It is a pleasant place to spend the evening after a day among ruins.
12. Sharaan Nature Reserve
Sharaan Nature Reserve is a beautiful natural area in AlUla, known for its sandstone mountains, valleys and wide desert views. It is a great place to enjoy AlUla’s landscapes and discover the region’s natural beauty. Visitors can explore the area through selected guided tours and outdoor activities.
